It Is Time to Make Texas A&M See the New Hogs

We are done with a bye week for the Hogs and time for a rematch with Texas A&M!  I would probably say that going into this game is a reminder of one of Bret Bielema's biggest failures as a coach here in Arkansas: never beating Texas A&M once.  There were so many times where he could've done it and it just did not happen.  He had 5 games against them and 3 of them went into overtime.  Chad Morris lost both times to Texas A&M of the 2 games that he had and all by one score.  Even before Bret Bielema and Chad Morris, we had John L. Smith and he had one time to beat Texas A&M.  We lost 58-10 that year.  The last time that we beat Texas A&M was in 2011 which was Bobby Petrino's last season with us.  Oh if he only wasn't doing bad things and got on the motor cycle wreck.  But for now, we have Sam Pittman and we are so much better so far with him.  I have a good feeling that we can actually do it this time for once.  We are 8th in the nation in Defensive Efficiency.  We just need to work on offense to be more consistent.  If all of that works well, we can do it.  I am tired of still losing to Texas A&M and I bet you are tired too.  It has been 9 years!  This has been the longest win streak that Texas A&M has ever had against Arkansas.  Arkansas, historically, leads this series 41-32-2.  Let's bring this series back to form.

Now let's get to the predictions for this week of football.  My predictions last week for College Football was 11-3 (78.6%) and my Underdog predictions were 0-2 (0%).  For NFL, I was 9-3 (75%) and my Underdog predictions were also 0-2 (0%).  Now here are my next predictions.

Hog Fans.........Sam Pittman is The Man

This recent Arkansas Razorback win against Ole Miss really has me passionate about the program.  This is a program for the past 2 seasons under Chad Morris never won an SEC game!  And now Sam Pittman has achieved so much more in 4 games than Chad Morris did in his 22 games he was here (would've been 24 games if he didn't get fired early).  Already Sam Pittman has won 2 SEC games for away and for home.  Last time we won an SEC away game was against Ole Miss in 2017 with Bret Bielema.  Last we won a home SEC game was in November of 2016 against Florida!  I was actually at that game! 4 years ago!

So, Sam Pittman is 2-2 right now for his overall record.  That is a 50% winning percentage so far.  Chad Morris went 4-18 which is 18.2%!  After Chad Morris got fired last year, he was hired as offensive coordinator for Auburn.  They are 2-2 also and performing below their standard.  This next meme describes my feelings towards their current loss to South Carolina.

Anyway, I am so excited after what I've seen with Sam Pittman so far.  Heck, I already made a chart of data that further shows why this is The Man for the job at Arkansas.  Look down here:

As you can see, this is the whole season turnover margins for Arkansas since 2012 (Post-Petrino Era).  What you need to notice though is that Sam Pittman was a coach at Arkansas once for the offensive line.  He was here for that from 2013 - 2015.  Notice a trend here?  The only times since 2012 that we've had an overall turnover margin that was positive was when he was here! Link The link here goes to another article that I wrote that further shows the good trends that happened when Sam Pittman was at Arkansas before.  Let them Hogs shine! Chad Morris sucks! John L. Smith sucked too! Bret Bielema needed Sam Pittman I think to keep his job when he was here.  Curse you Bobby Petrino!  Okay, I think I'm done venting about past coaches that we've had.  It just feels so darn good to see our team actually competing and playing well.  That defense looked like it was having fun and it has been a long time since I've seen that happen.  Maybe the first time ever.  We did have like 2 shut-outs in a row in 2014 with our defense.  Remember who was a coach here?  Sam Pittman!

If you didn't know, I graduated with my Undergraduate in Mathematics last year in December.  My graduation was I think a week or two after Sam Pittman got hired as Head Coach here.  Now look what happened in this image:
That's me and Sam Pittman!  He bothered to even come to graduations even as soon as he got here.  He had this energy about him that brought me hope.

Ok, I think I'm done praising Sam Pittman.  I just pray the success continues and that he'll coach here for a long time and then retire here.  Now I want to do my picks this week for college football and NFL.
I'm gonna do something different this time around.  I'll have my usual picks but I'll also make an underdog section where I'll pick significant games where an upset could occur.  I'll do that for college and NFL.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like College Football Season

Believe it or not, college football is actually going to start soon.  Like this Saturday!  But, it's just an FCS match-up between Austin Peay and Central Arkansas on 9:00pm on ESPN.  Hey, it's better than nothing.  The actual start of college football will be during Labor Day weekend.  This year will be different because the Big Ten cancelled all fall sports as well as the PAC-12.  The SEC won't start until September 26 and they'll only play conference games.  My Razorbacks are going to go through a lot besides the COVID-19 crisis.

All that I hope to say is that all the players will be safe and that there will be as much football that we can enjoy.  I need to get excited about something  from entertainment this year.  I will officially start my football predictions for this season! I will make all of my predictions already for the Razorback football season just to see how accurate I was at the beginning and then I'll compare at the end.  Of course I will still make the weekly predictions and analysis as the season goes on.  I will also today make this week's game predictions as well.  This week is easy since it's just the one game between Austin Peay and Central Arkansas.

Game Predictions:

  • 8/29/2020
    • Austin Peay vs. Central Arkansas
      • Winner: Central Arkansas
Arkansas Razorback Whole Season Predictions

  • 09/26/2020
    • Georiga vs. Arkansas
      • Winner: Georgia
  • 10/3/2020
    • Arkansas vs. Miss. St.
      • Winner: Arkansas
  • 10/10/2020
    • Arkansas vs. Auburn
      • Winner: Auburn
  • 10/17/2020
    • Ole Miss vs. Arkansas
      • Winner: Arkansas
  • 10/31/2020
    • Arkansas vs. Texas A&M
      • Winner: Texas A&M
  • 11/7/2020
    • Tennesse vs. Arkansas
      • Winner: Arkansas
  • 11/14/2020
    • Arkansas vs. Florida
      • Winner: Florida
  • 11/21/2020
    • LSU vs. Arkansas
      • Winner: LSU
  • 11/28/2020
    • Arkansas vs. Missouri
      • Winner: Missouri
  • 12/5/2020
    • Alabama vs. Arkansas
      • Winner: Alabama
This leaves my predicted record for Arkansas to be 3-7.  This is just my professional analysis on it.  Of course I will be rooting for them all the way to go 10-0 (which would be so awesome!!!).  Well I really hope we can get plenty of college football to watch and hopefully COVID-19 could just die and crawl into the pit of darkness that it came from.  This pandemic will prevent us from watching football and seeing entertaining fans.  Look at these fans!  This video shows a fat one for Arkansas

And look at this guy.  Please! I want the entertainment of college football!

Booooyyy The Covid Sports Blues

As everyone already knows, we are in the middle of a pandemic.  Because of this, there has been hardly any sports events happening.  While this is going on, football season approaches and I hope that somehow it can go forward in a safe way for the players and the fans.  But maaaannn has it been strange in the sports world during all of this.

The most frequent sport that I saw, besides reruns of old games, was the Corn Hole Championship.  I didn't even know that that was an actual serious thing going on!  Geez it's corn hole.  You toss bags into a little hole from a distance.  It is really fun to just watch the serious looks that these players are giving as they prepare to toss the bean bags into the corn holes.  Look at this image here:

Of course because of the pandemic, they are wearing those face masks and face shields.  And of course I was watching one and found this guy:

I feel like I might even take up playing professional corn hole if I'm allowed to wear Crocs.  Of course this event was even before the pandemic as you can see with the lack of face masks and social distancing.  Check out some corn hole when you can.  It is really something else.

I hope that football season can go on since it is my favorite sport.  There is only so much corn hole that you can take before you start to look like the guy in Crocs.

Can Online Reviews Predict the Box Office of a Star Wars Movie?

Gosh it has been awhile since I've posted something, but here I am.  Today I felt like doing correlation coefficients to determine if any particular website of online reviews can predict how well any Star Wars movie will do at the worldwide box office with adjusted grosses.  The data that I'll use comes from ultimatemovierankings.com, IMDB, and Rotten Tomatoes.  IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes are the biggest sources of movie reviews that I use and what practically everyone else uses.  Ultimate Movie Rankings is where I got the adjusted world wide grosses because IMDB seems to have bought out BoxofficeMojo where I used to look for movie grosses because now you have to sign up for IMDB Pro (and pay money!) to see those grosses.  Ultimate Movie Rankings isn't a very flashy website for this stuff but it is what we got now since this abomination happened. Any who, now let's get to the good stuff.  I'll just show you the data that I've gotten here on this link.

As you can see, I already did the correlation calculations when you look to the very right of the spreadsheet of data.  Each correlation calculation comes from using the data of the Worldwide Boxoffice Adjusted Grosses to each of the Star Wars movie scores from each piece of data that I've gotten from these websites.  If you need to be reminded of what the correlation numbers mean, I'll tell you right now!  If the correlation is at 0.00, that means that there is no correlation whatsoever between the two sets of data.  If the correlation is 1.00, that means that there is a perfect correlation.  The highest correlation that I got was 0.63 when I did a correlation test between the Worldwide Boxoffice Adjusted Grosses to the Rotten Tomatoes Critic Average Scores (out of 10).  Even though that is the highest, it still isn't that good.  I mean, if you got a 63 on a test, it is barely passing but not really good at all.  If we want to see if there is a good correlation, it needs to be between 0.90 and 1.  But none of these cases from these websites show this type of correlation.  What is funniest about this is that the audience user scores have the worst correlations, even though I hear a lot that fans want movie studios to make the movies how they want them to and then they'll perform better.  But of course, this is just a sample of 11 movies that I did.  To get an even more accurate correlation, we need hundreds or even thousands of movies.  Perhaps this is something to consider for any type of movie as well and not just Star Wars movies.

Since I did all of this research, I will give you some interesting data about these Star Wars movies.  For starters, the average Star Wars movie made $1.471 billion dollars worldwide by adjusted boxoffice inflated ticket prices.  When it comes to the Star Wars movies that are then "above average" when it comes to this are:

  • The Phantom Menace
  • A New Hope
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • The Force Awakens.
For the IMDB Scores (out of 10) is an average of 7.5.  The "above average" for this category (excluding Revenge of the Sith since it is 7.5 and not above it) are:
  • Rogue One
  • A New Hope
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Return of the Jedi
  • The Force Awakens
For the Metacritic Score (out of 100) is an average of 68.1.  The "above average" for this category are:
  • A New Hope
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • The Force Awakens
  • The Last Jedi.
For the RT Critic Score is an average of 77.82.  The "above average" for this category are:
  • Revenge of the Sith
  • Rogue One
  • A New Hope
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Return of the Jedi
  • The Force Awakens
  • The Last Jedi.
For the RT Audience Score is an average of 75.64.  The "above average" for this category are:
  • Rogue One
  • A New Hope
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Return of the Jedi
  • The Force Awakens
  • The Rise of Skywalker
For the RT Critic Score Avg (out of 10) is an average of 7.39.  The "above average" for this category are:
  • Rogue One
  • A New Hope
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • The Force Awakens
  • The Last Jedi
For the RT Audience Score (out of 10) is an average of 7.71.  The "above average" for this category are:
  • Rogue One
  • A New Hope
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Return of the Jedi
  • The Force Awakens
  • The Rise of Skywalker
According to this, I will now rank all of the Star Wars movies.  Each movie mentioned in a category will get a point that determines how good they are in the "above average" Star Wars movies.
  1. A New Hope - 7 points
  2. The Empire Strikes Back - 7 points
  3. The Force Awakens - 7 points
  4. Rogue One - 5 points
  5. Return of the Jedi - 4 points
  6. The Last Jedi - 3 points
  7. The Rise of Skywalker - 2 points
  8. Revenge of the Sith - 1 point
  9. The Phantom Menace - 1 point
This means that the only Star Wars movies that I guess that are "below average" are Solo: A Star Wars Story and Attack of the Clones.  Now seeing these rankings and seeing what is "below average", it just doesn't feel that right.  A lot of people use IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes to see how well movies are doing.  In the case of Star Wars, they seem to not measure them that well.  Even the best correlation that we had was 0.63 and that's not good still.  To me, I don't think Solo was a below average Star Wars movie and Phantom Menace is only slightly above average because of all the hype it had before everyone saw it literally which made it's box office massive.  So far, it is hard to predict how well any Star Wars movie will do.  The only for sure thing is that the first movie of each trilogy is going to be a box office record breaker.

I like watching all of them and some more than others.  But of course I think that if you want to judge them overall as films, it makes me think that they are less great if you need books and comic books to explain plot points better.  The Rise of Skywalker would've been better to me if they had just mentioned that Palpatine was a clone in the movie instead of the novel to explain how he's back.  Of course I like lore and books giving us more in depth info about it, but stuff like this needs the movie itself to explain it or even mention it better.  Oh well!  I love Star Wars and I'll see any of them any time.  Except maybe Attack of the Clones.  Only sometimes.  But if it is your favorite movie, I'll just say:

Kyle Shanahan? More Like Kyle Changahan

I decided to post about the Super Bowl after everyone has had their say about the outcome.  Oh man, this is very much like deja vu right now.  If you read my last post about my pick for the Super Bowl, "Super Bowl Champions: Chiefs or 49ers?", I said this on the bottom. (The red shows that I called for the comeback to happen!)

"It is for this reason that I think the FPI has taken a lot to favor the Chiefs because of their recent showing of overcoming adversity very well.  Not to mention, that the 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator for the 2016 Falcons when they played the Patriots in Super Bowl 51.  That is the famous Super Bowl where the Falcons were up 28-3 against the Patriots and lost 34-28 making it the biggest choke I have ever seen in my life.  Perhaps the same thing could repeat again but with the Chiefs now against Kyle Shanahan?  I mean, the Chiefs have been doing phenomenal comebacks throughout the playoffs.  So why not the Super Bowl as well?"

If you haven't read this post, you can press on this link.

Anyway, I was seeing that the same type of thing was going to happen to Kyle Shanahan again.  In his first Super Bowl, he blew a 28-3 lead against the Patriots.  Now, he blew a 20-10 lead against the Chiefs.  I guess they improved on the margin of the comeback that they gave up. But still, it is just ridiculous.  The meme that described this circus perfectly was this image:

I mean, I picked the Chiefs to win and I loved that they did.  They are practically my favorite NFL team now.  But what the crap 49ers!  I don't hate the 49ers, but sometimes I can get upset at a team for losing a game that they could've easily won if they were just not being downright stupid.  I mean how can you lose an NFL game when you are up 20-10 when there is 11:57 left in the 4th Quarter, and then you give up 21 points in a 10:55 time-lapse!  Don't get me wrong, the Chiefs have been doing this throughout the whole playoffs. They are perfectly able to do something like this.  To go on record, the Chiefs have outscored their competition 100-14 whenever they start their comebacks during the this season's playoffs.  But what I want to focus on is how the 49ers could've easily avoided this if Kyle Shanahan didn't get Changnesia.

I'll explain what I mean.  This explains why I called this post "Kyle Shanahan? More Like Kyle Changahan."  There is a comedy from NBC called "Community."  It is a funny show and I recommend it highly.  The term Changnesia came from one of the characters named Ben Chang (played by Ken Jeong).  In part of the show, he does something horrible to the other characters and disappears for a while.  He then appears later and claims that he has "Changnesia" which means that he is having amnesia but can't remember his life as Ben Chang.  I won't spoil how the rest of that story arc goes so that you can find it out yourselves.  But right here in the Super Bowl and Kyle Shanahan seemed to have suffered from Changnesia.

Don't worry, I'm getting there to why I'm saying this.  I'm saying that he seems to suffer from this because he did the exact same thing that made him lose his first Super Bowl against the Patriots.  What he did is that he forgot that his offense is good at running the ball.

I will break this down for Super Bowl 51 when Kyle Shanahan was on the Falcons playing against the Patriots first.  We see that it is 2:06 in the 3rd Quarter and the Falcons have the ball while they are ahead 28-9.  If you don't know, the clock can stop if you throw an incomplete pass or run out of bounds if you don't what to use your timeouts.  If you just run the ball, the clock doesn't stop.  The Falcons are up 28-9 and if I was the coach, I would want to burn down the clock and get the job done.  But no, the Falcons have a 3 and out from 3 passes where 1 was incomplete and a sack.  1 incomplete pass is pretty much a timeout to help the other team have more time to catch up.  They only burn 2:15 off the clock.  Then the Patriots take 5:07 off the clock to score a field goal.  The score is now 28-12.  The Falcons still have a good lead so they don't have to worry much if they just play smart.  They do for the first 2 plays since they run the ball to start their next possession.  But then they pass and then there's a sack-fumble and the Patriots recover!  Falcons only burned 1:20 off the clock.  Patriots then burn 2:28 off the clock to score a touchdown and a 2 point conversion to make the score 28-20.  The Falcons then get the ball back with 5:53 left in the game.  At this point, if you are a Falcons' fan, you should be a little worried.  But your team is still up 28-20.  All they have to do is run the ball, burn down the clock, and they can hoist that Lombardi Trophy.  But no, they pass the ball 4 times and ran the ball 2 times this next possession!  1 pass is incomplete and 1 pass is a sack.  They only burn 2:26 off the clock which leaves 3:27 on the clock for the 4th Quarter.  The Patriots score a touchdown burning 2:33 off the clock while scoring another 2 point conversion to tie the game at 28-28.  The game goes into overtime and then the Patriots win it 34-28.  The Falcons were good at running the ball.  They averaged 5.8 yards per rush attempt in the game but just steered from that at the end.  They threw the ball 9 times and only ran 4 times!

You think that after that traumatic event that Kyle Shanahan would learn from his mistakes and run the ball more when he is in that similar situation. But wait!  He repeats the same mistakes!  This time he ran the ball only 3 times and passed the ball 5 times that resulted in 3 incompletions!  He basically gave the Chiefs 3 timeouts by doing that.  I'm glad he did because I was rooting for the Chiefs, but come on! It is Super Bowl 51 again.  He does this in the exact same situation.  This happened during the time lapse in the meme above, except I only covered from the time that they were up 20-10 and then they were down 24-20 because it could've all been avoided if it wasn't for the stupid play-calling.  Kyle Shanahan suffered from Changnesia because he did not remember his mistakes from the first time around.  He was also averaging 6.4 yards per rush attempt which was even better than his average of 5.8 yards per rush attempt in Super Bowl 51.

But anyway, Go Chiefs!

Super Bowl Champions: Chiefs or 49ers?

It is that time of football season once again.  After getting through a week of not caring about the Pro Bowl since none of the players actually try in that game, we finally get to the biggest game of them all:  The Super Bowl.

I am a big fan of this Super Bowl because it is a Super Bowl that we've never had before: Chiefs vs. 49ers.  We have Patrick Mahomes vs. Jimmy G.  Andy Reid vs. Kyle Shanahan. This is gonna be good.

If I am going to pick a team, I will pick the Kansas City Chiefs.  For one, I think it is finally time for Andy Reid to win a Super Bowl.  Andy Reid has 221 wins including the Regular Season and the Playoffs total in his career.  That is 6th all-time which makes him the winningest NFL coach in NFL history from the Super Bowl Era without a Super Bowl win.  The time could finally come for Andy Reid to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.  Also it is time for him to have that fast food buffet in the White House with Donald Trump.

Comparing the Super Bowl Opponents

I am now going to go over some of the stats for each team that shows the comparisons between them.  The Chiefs in the Regular Season scored 28.2 points per game which is 5th in the league and allowed 19.3 points per game which is 7th in the league.  The 49ers in the Regular Season scored 29.9 points per game which is 2nd in the league and allowed 19.4 points per game which is 8th in the league.  When it comes to these numbers, these teams look pretty even.  However, they run very different offenses.

The Chiefs are a lot more pass heavy.  They averaged 281.1 pass yards per game which was 5th in the league while the 49ers averaged 237 pass yards per game which was 13th in the league.  This will show then that the 49ers ran the ball more effectively.  The 49ers averaged 144.1 rush yards per game which was 2nd in the league and the Chiefs averaged 98.1 rush yards per game which was 23rd in the league.  These are just their stats from how they have been performing during the regular season.  The FPI can tell us more about how to predict this match from past performances.

The FPI now has the Chiefs winning it all with a 64.8% chance.  The FPI takes into account many factors to how a team can win.  It can be if it is a home or an away game, who is starting, amount of rest for each team, past performances, and even things like how long of a distance of travel does a team have to make that affects the team's preparation.  In my opinion, I feel that the past performance is what is affecting this FPI rating.  Let's look at the these teams more recent performances.

In the past 8 games, the Chiefs have scored an average of 31.6 points and allowed only 15.5 points per game.  The 49ers scored an average of 31 points and allowed 23.9 points per game.  So far, the Chiefs look more impressive during this run.  Not to mention that the Chiefs are 8-0 in this run and the 49ers are 6-2.  But maybe I'm the dummy by not looking at it at a different perspective.  The 49ers during that run were 6-1 against teams with winning records.  They scored 32.3 points and allowed 22.3 points on average for those games.  Kansas City was 3-0 against teams with winning records.  They scored 36.3 points and allowed 23.7 points on average for those games.

What the FPI is probably taking into account too is also how these teams have endured adversity recently.  Let's look at these two teams' playoff games so far this season.  The 49ers were able to easily handle their playoff games easily by scoring 32 points and allowing 15 points per game.  The Chiefs though had some adversity to overcome.  They were down 24-0 against Houston and down 17-7 against Tennessee during their playoff games.  But once they turned it on, there was no going back.  The Chiefs went on a 51-7 scoring spree against the Texans after down 24-0 to win 51-31.  They then went on a 28-7 scoring spree against the Titans down 17-7 to win 35-24.  If you were to just take in the scoring numbers for Kansas City for when they did these comebacks, they scored 39.5 points and allowed 7 points per comeback.  The way that they have responded to adversity in the playoffs has just been staggering.

It is for this reason that I think the FPI has taken a lot to favor the Chiefs because of their recent showing of overcoming adversity very well. So why not the Super Bowl as well?

To me, the best champions are the ones that usually do well.  But when they are faced with adversity, they do it in a spectacular performance.  I just love that touchdown run by Patrick Mahomes against the Titans.  It shows his toughness and grit to get his team to win.  I'll end this post with a video I made that compares this run to a similar one done by Steve Young in 1988.

Once again, my choice is the Chiefs.  My record so far for this NFL season has been 56-33 which is 62.9% accuracy.  Let the football game and Super Bowl commercials begin!

Thanksgiving Week: Hogs and Tigers

It's Thanksgiving week and I'm ready to rest, eat, and watch football a lot.  I don't have much to say about this week.  It wa...
